Slime Trials is a fast paced, swinging action, precision platformer for Game Boy!

The humble slime is every game's most basic enemy but this is no ordinary slime and they've got something to prove to all those flashy heroes barreling through the caves.

This game is quite difficult and you will die, probably a lot. Get through all the trials with the least amount of deaths and the shortest time possible!

New levels will be added as I complete them. I plan to have around 25-30 levels total in the end!

This game was made for GB Compo 2023.

Controls

Move/Swing D-Pad Left/RightLeft/Right Arrow Keys
JumpAX
Hook (45 degree angle)BZ
Hook (90 degree angle)Up + BUp + Z
Adjust Rope LengthUp/Down (while stationary)Up/Down Arrow Keys
Go Through DoorsUpUp Arrow Key

Grab the key to open locked doors!

Grab the bear for a one time protection against spikes!

Tips:
- The best way to conserve momentum is to grapple while going at a 45 degree angle down-right and to release at a 45 degree angle up-right!
- You can shorten your jump height by letting go of the A button before the apex
- There is extra time after falling off a ledge where you can still jump! This can allow you to jump further
- If you're stuck on a wall, extend the rope by pressing down and swing out of it!

Please post screenshots of your best scores if you beat it!

Includes a GB rom, meant for DMG (original) gameboy but it will also work on GBC. Can be played on any gameboy emulator but it feels best on the real thing!

Finally..... got under 2 mins :))) this is one of the best games I've played on Gameboy! More levels please!

(1 edit)

i thought the bear was a child
10/10 would play again

An easy mistake to make, glad you liked it!

i was making jokes to myself of how dying makes the kid die instead, it's just a plush i can't believe myself😭

Bonjour,

Really enjoyed the game, I hope you end up adding a bunch more levels. Did some speedrun attempts cause the movement is fun, check it out if you're interested.

Hey this was awesome! I think you've beaten my own fastest time, which is very impressive with how much I played it for testing lol. I do plan to add more levels, keep an eye out for updates!

This is a really fun game. Definitely see myself coming back to play it often. C:

Awesome, glad you're enjoying it!

Ok... so...

HOOK PHYSICS ON GAMEBOY??? o.o

I'm used to games like Donkey Kong, Tetris and that, so seeing and playing this feels like a "new upgraded version of the classic GameBoy"

Excellent work!

Thank you! It was a bit complicated to make considering the gameboy can't even do division natively, so adding some trigonometry is rough!

bad minigame, the wind booster only used once

(+1)

Yeah, the booster is only used in 1 level but it was more of a proof of concept that I whipped up. I plan to add more levels, including a softer introduction to the booster mechanic. I'm not super happy with how that level ended up feeling though, so expect it to change!

emm maybe try to make a grapple disable zone that u cant use the grapple on the zone? and a type of a block that you cant use grapple on it?

and think something to not repeat same jump, like using grapple on spike, high control and etc

[dont care this player he just overplayed a sandbox platform game L]

The physics of the grappling hook is very good. Hard!

Thanks! Glad you like it

The art is minimalism and the control is apparently simple. but man, this game is very hardcore and challenging, but also very satisfying when player pass a level. I would say it's a very good game.

Hey thanks! I really enjoyed your entry for the compo as well

This is very cool, a great quick challenge. Loved how tiny everything felt in the 8x8 tile format. I didn't see half the instructions, so I didn't now how to adjust my rope length or fire at a 90 degree angle :D but I made it to the end.

Hey thanks for trying it out! Under 100 deaths is a respectable score :D I had to add that extra digit to the death counter halfway through development lol

A very slick, very good, very hard platformer for the Game Boy. I suggest players to carefully read Controls as it is not your usual jump&run game — to be fair, controls could have put in-game too.

It starts easy and it immediately ramps up, so be ready to see that death counter increasing. I am impressed by the smoothness of the action and glad that the author published the code for others to benefit.

Excellent production!

Glad you liked it! There's a few polish things I would like to add still and adding the controls into the game is one of them for sure. Thanks for trying it out!
